Poster: Incorporating Ultrashort-Chain Compounds into the Comprehensive Analysis of PFAS in Potable and Non-Potable Waters

Ultrashort-chain (USC) per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, <C4) are highly polar compounds increasingly detected at elevated levels in aquatic systems. To comprehensively assess PFAS contamination, simultaneous analysis of USC and long-chain PFAS is required; however, USC PFAS exhibit insufficient retention under conventional chromatographic conditions. 

Methods: In this study, a simple and robust workflow was developed for the simultaneous determination of C1–C14 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic and sulfonic acids, along with additional PFAS, in potable and non-potable waters. Separation was achieved using a polar-embedded reversed-phase LC column with inert-coated hardware. A dilute-and-shoot approach was validated by accuracy and precision studies in fortified drinking water and wastewater. 

Main results: Application to various real water samples demonstrated reliable quantification across diverse matrices, enabling comprehensive monitoring of ultrashort- and long-chain PFAS. 

Highlights/novel aspects: One method only to analyse all chain lengths of PFAS, from the most polars to the most apolars. 

Poster: Pushing the Boundaries of Low-Level GC-MS Semivolatiles Analysis

Methods: GC–MS conditions were systematically established and optimized for both scan and selected ion monitoring (SIM) modes. The aim was to provide laboratories with two complementary workflows: a straightforward and robust scan-based approach suitable for broad screening purposes, and a highly sensitive SIM workflow for the targeted analysis and quantification of selected analytes. The scan mode enables comprehensive mass spectral acquisition and is particularly well suited for routine analyses and the investigation of unknown samples. In contrast, the SIM mode increases sensitivity and selectivity by monitoring specific target ions, thereby significantly improving detection limits. 

Main results: The developed SIM workflow therefore represents a practical and cost-effective alternative to GC–MS/MS instrumentation, especially for laboratories without access to tandem mass spectrometry.
