{"id":51768,"date":"2016-04-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/uncategorized\/peak-capacity-and-selectivity-in-gas-chromatography\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T21:37:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T21:37:40","slug":"peak-capacity-and-selectivity-in-gas-chromatography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/fr\/blog-it\/gnbl4760\/peak-capacity-and-selectivity-in-gas-chromatography","title":{"rendered":"Peak Capacity and Selectivity in Gas Chromatography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I recently had the pleasure of hearing Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.uwaterloo.ca\/~tgorecki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taduesz Gorecki <\/a>from the University of Waterloo lecture on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC).\u00a0\u00a0 One of his chief areas of research is on the\u00a0GCxGC modulator, which is essentially the &#8220;injector&#8221; for the second dimension column in this multidimensional chromatography approach.\u00a0\u00a0A twist on the usual process from Taduesz involved &#8220;stop-flow&#8221; modulation, where the column flow\u00a0in the first dimension\u00a0is halted while the injection and separation\u00a0occur for the second dimension.\u00a0 Where the usual second dimension columns and\u00a0separations in GCxGC\u00a0are super short (sometimes L less than 1 m and time less than 2 sec) to preserve the first dimension separation, &#8220;stop-flow&#8221; modulation allows longer second dimension separations (and longer second dimension columns to improve them).\u00a0 The first and second dimension separations are more independent of each other than in traditional GCxGC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GCxGC in general, and especially stop-flow GCxGC, generate very large peak capacities versus one-dimensional GC, up to an order-of-magnitude higher.&nbsp; But in his lecture Tadeusz reminded us that without good choices of stationary phase selectivity&nbsp;in both dimensions, that peak capacity won&#8217;t be fully realized.&nbsp; I can easily demonstrate that with some recent work I did for an upcoming lecture at the 40th International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography and 13th GCxGC Symposium.&nbsp; Note in the figure below how the Stabilwax column in the second dimension pulls apart the diesel, placing the aromatic analytes further away (higher) from the aliphatic compounds (line of peaks at the bottom of the contour plot).&nbsp; However, the Rtx-200 (a trifluoropropylmethyl phase) does not have&nbsp;the necessary&nbsp;selectivity to allow full use of the 2D space.&nbsp; Never fear; I exploited that space later by analyzing an environmental sample containing&nbsp;PAHs, pesticides, PCBs, explosives, and priority pollutants.&nbsp; Sometimes it&#8217;s all about having selectivity choices in GCxGC, and that&#8217;s where Restek excels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-peak-capacity-and-selectivity-diesel-on-wax-and-200-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16348\" title=\"-\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-peak-capacity-and-selectivity-diesel-on-wax-and-200-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-peak-capacity-and-selectivity-diesel-on-wax-and-200-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-peak-capacity-and-selectivity-diesel-on-wax-and-200-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-peak-capacity-and-selectivity-diesel-on-wax-and-200.jpg 1472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the pleasure of hearing Professor Taduesz Gorecki from the University of Waterloo lecture on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC).
