In campo GC-MS, la struttura dei PAH ne permette l&#8217;analisi in monitoraggio ionico selettivo (SIM), una modalit\u00e0 pi\u00f9 sensibile ma comunque selettiva, dal momento che questi composti in genere ionizzano senza andare incontro a una frammentazione significativa alle normali condizioni di ionizzazione elettronica, e ci\u00f2 si traduce in forti segnali degli ioni molecolari. Questo&nbsp;semplifica la conversione di un&#8217;analisi esistente per composti semivolatili, come la U.S. EPA 8270D, solitamente eseguita in scansione completa, in un&#8217;analisi SIM che permette di rilevare livelli ancora pi\u00f9 bassi di PAH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;analisi GC-MS dei PAH illustrata di seguito evidenzia i benefici del passaggio dal formato di colonna tradizionale (Rxi-5Sil MS da 30\u202fm, 0,25\u202fmm, 0,25 \u00b5m) a una pi\u00f9 corta e pi\u00f9 efficiente che consente le stesse separazioni in minor tempo (Rxi-5Sil MS da 20 m, 0,15 mm, 0,15\u202f\u00b5m). I parametri ottimizzati per il metodo pi\u00f9 corto, come presentati di seguito, assicurano che il profilo di eluizione sul nuovo formato di colonna rimanga identico a quello tipicamente osservato sulla colonna tradizionale. Per gli strumenti Agilent 6890 e 7890 con forni da 120 V che non riescono a&nbsp;raggiungere le velocit\u00e0 di rampa nell&#8217;analisi adattata, \u00e8 stato utilizzato il GC Accelerator Kit di Restek per aumentare la velocit\u00e0 di rampa del GC senza dover modificare l\u2019hardware o il software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Come mostrato nel cromatogramma, questa analisi GC-MS dei PAH ha prodotto risoluzione del picco e risposta buone anche a 0,05 ng con metodo on-column e un tempo di analisi di soli 15\u202fminuti. Ogni volta che si analizzano i PAH in tracce si deve prestare particolare attenzione a ridurre lo scodamento del picco, che pu\u00f2 verificarsi con impostazioni di temperatura troppo basse del MS o quando non si utilizzano componenti sorgente ottimizzati per l&#8217;applicazione specifica. In questo caso si consiglia, per esempio, di utilizzare una lente dell\u2019estrattore da 9\u202fmm anzich\u00e9 la&nbsp;versione standard da 3\u202fmm. Si noti che a concentrazioni particolarmente basse, la calibrazione pu\u00f2 richiedere un adattamento di altro tipo, ma&nbsp;i&nbsp;test interni hanno dimostrato che i requisiti di calibrazione del
