{"id":76419,"date":"2014-04-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/?p=76419"},"modified":"2026-01-28T15:52:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:52:46","slug":"fatty-acid-methyl-esters-fames-converting-by-weight-to-gml","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/it\/blog-it\/gnbl5493\/fatty-acid-methyl-esters-fames-converting-by-weight-to-gml","title":{"rendered":"Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMES) &#8211; converting % by weight to \u00b5g\/mL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first time I was asked by a customer about how to convert % by weight of one of our FAME reference standards to \u00b5g\/mL, I needed to ask for some help.&nbsp; Because we (tech service) occasionally get asked this question, I thought I would show the calculation in a post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take Restek catalog number&nbsp;35077&nbsp;as an example.&nbsp; The overall concentration of this Food Industry FAME Mix is 30mg\/mL.&nbsp; &nbsp;Individual compound concentrations range from 2 to 6% by weight.&nbsp;&nbsp; So what are the individual compound concentrations in \u00b5g\/mL?&nbsp; &nbsp;I\u2019m not going to list them all, but rather show you how to perform this calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We list the first compound as C4:0 and at 4% by weight.&nbsp; Since the total concentration of 35077 is 30mg\/mL, to determine the concentration of C4:0 in \u00b5g\/mL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4\/100 x 30mg\/mL = 0.04 x 30mg\/mL = 1.2mg\/mL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To convert to \u00b5g\/mL:&nbsp; 1.2mg\/mL x 1000\u00b5g\/mg = 1200\u00b5g\/mL<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image76419_9ca6a3-a9 .kb-image-has-overlay:after{opacity:0.3;}<\/style>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image76419_9ca6a3-a9 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-fatty-acid-methyl-esters-fames-converting-by-weight-to-gml-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"kb-img wp-image-77740\" title=\"-\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-fatty-acid-methyl-esters-fames-converting-by-weight-to-gml-01.jpg 200w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-fatty-acid-methyl-esters-fames-converting-by-weight-to-gml-01-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you purchase a neat standard like&nbsp;35066, then there will be one extra step to obtaining the final answer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This catalog number contains approximately 100mg.&nbsp; For the sake of simplicity, let\u2019s say you remove exactly 100mg and dissolve this material into 10mL of methylene chloride.&nbsp; This will produce a solution with a concentration of 10mg\/mL.&nbsp;&nbsp; Once again, I will use the first listed compound (C14:0 in this case) for an example calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C14:0 is in the neat material at 6% by weight.&nbsp; Since the total concentration of the solution you prepared is at 10mg\/mL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6\/100 x 10mg\/mL = 0.06 x 10mg\/mL = 0.6mg\/mL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To convert to \u00b5g\/mL:&nbsp; 0.6mg\/mL x 1000\u00b5g\/mg = 600\u00b5g\/mL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;I hope you have found these examples helpful the next time you need to perform similar calculations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks for reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first time I was asked by a customer about how to convert % by weight of one of our FAME reference standards to &micro;g\/mL, I needed to ask for some help.
