Solvent Miscibility Chart

Solvent Miscibility and Solubility Chart

A solvent miscibility chart shows how different liquids interact when combined, indicating whether they are miscible (able to mix uniformly) or immiscible (forming separate phases).

Understanding these substance interactions is essential in research, analytical chemistry, and the development of advanced materials and new substances.

Miscibility can vary depending on the chemical properties of the solvents and, in some cases, temperature. When two liquids are immiscible, combining them may result in phase separation, and in partially miscible systems the two liquids can separate into distinct layers. This behavior is important when selecting solvents for sample preparation, extraction, chromatography, and spectroscopy.

For example, the solvent miscibility chart indicates that tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water are miscible and can form a uniform solution. In contrast, some solvent combinations have limited compatibility and may separate into distinct phases.

While specifically useful for selecting liquid chromatography (LC) mobile phases, researchers can use this chart as a quick reference when selecting solvents for laboratory procedures, including applications involving pharmaceuticals and other chemical analyses.
