{"id":51783,"date":"2018-01-10T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-10T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/uncategorized\/sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T17:43:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T17:43:18","slug":"sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/ja\/blogs\/gnbl4785\/sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview","title":{"rendered":"Sampling and analysis of landfill gas \/ biogas, an overview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lately it seems that the&nbsp;sampling and analysis of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Landfill_gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landfill gas<\/a>&nbsp;\/&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biogas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biogas<\/a>&nbsp;is a popular topic among our customers.&nbsp; When initially ask about the topic, I had an idea of what customers were trying to do, but didn\u2019t really have a firm grasp on the topic.&nbsp; As I dug deeper, I began to realize just how broad and complicated this topic actually was and no longer was I surprised customers were asking us for some guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was aware that gas analysis via GC&nbsp;was a primary aspect of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsdr.cdc.gov\/hac\/landfill\/pdfs\/landfill_2001_ch2mod.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monitoring landfills<\/a>.&nbsp; GC analysis of most or all&nbsp;fixed\/permanent gases&nbsp;including CH4, CO2, N2, O2, CO and H2 was often mentioned by most customers.&nbsp; I also knew that&nbsp;H2S and NH3&nbsp;were typically monitored because of their negative health effects above certain concentrations and their unpleasant odors.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-01.jpg\" alt=\"Several different sizes of Restek air canisters.\" class=\"wp-image-16660\" title=\"-\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-01.jpg 200w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-01-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After a brief discussion of these gases, the next topic usually discussed was trace VOC&#8217;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volatile_organic_compound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volatile Organic Compounds<\/a>) collection\/sampling and analysis. Unlike the fixed gases which are commonly collected in\u00a0air cans\u00a0and\/or\u00a0sample bags, trace VOC&#8217;s are routinely collected onto\u00a0thermal desorption tubes\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/articles\/GNOT3419\/thermal-desorption-tubes-vs-canister-sampling\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/articles\/GNOT3419\/thermal-desorption-tubes-vs-canister-sampling\/\">concentrate the sample<\/a>\u00a0in order for the instrument\/detector to be able to detect these trace levels.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-02.jpg\" alt=\"Thermal desorption tubes in a box.\" class=\"wp-image-16666\" title=\"-\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-02.jpg 200w, https:\/\/discover.restek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/blog-sampling-and-analysis-of-landfill-gas-biogas-an-overview-02-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Those two sampling\/analysis were about the extent of what I knew. Only after talking with customers and reading more on the topic did I realize there were multiple other sampling\/analysis performed associated with landfill gas \/ biogas.&nbsp; These included mercaptans,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2016-06\/documents\/pierce.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">siloxanes<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2017-08\/documents\/method_25c.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">non-methane hydrocarbons\/organics<\/a>, aromatics, alcohols, etc.&nbsp; It seemed like the list of compounds could be quite extensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how does one determine which analysis is needed? Usually the customer determines the list.&nbsp; How does a customer determine the list?&nbsp; If I understood correctly from the references I reviewed, it is determined by local, state and federal agencies based upon their regulations.&nbsp; For landfills, it appears sampling\/analysis requirements can be dictated by the size (acreage) of the site, the age of the landfill, and previous collected data.&nbsp; For biogas, the starting material and the process (fermentation, digestion or other) usually dictates the compound list and\/or method\/analysis requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For additional information, I found the following interesting and informative.&nbsp; I hope you do too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cfpub.epa.gov\/si\/si_public_record_report.cfm?Lab=NRMRL&amp;direntryid=137824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EPA landfill gas<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sepa.org.uk\/media\/28987\/guidance-for-monitoring-of-trace-components-in-landfill-gas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guidance for Monitoring Trace Components in Landfill Gas<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately it seems that the sampling and analysis of landfill gas \/ biogas is a popular topic among our customers.
